To achieve maximum yield in pea cultivation, sow seeds between October and mid-November. Space plants at 30-45 cm × 10-15 cm using 20-25 kg of seed per acre.
1. Soil and Climate
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained, sandy loam to clay loam soils with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Temperature: Requires cool conditions, ideally between 10°C to 30°C for optimal growth.
2. Sowing and Seed Rate
- Season: Best sown in the Rabi (winter) season, from October to November.
- Seed Rate: 20 to 25 kg per acre.
- Spacing: Row-to-row spacing of 30–45 cm and plant-to-plant spacing of 10–15 cm. Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep.
3. Fertilizer Management
- Organic Manure: Incorporate 10 tonnes of FYM (Farmyard Manure) per hectare at least 15 days before final land preparation.
- Chemical Fertilizers: Apply a balanced dose of 25 kg Nitrogen / ha, 70 kg P₂O₅ / ha, and 50 kg K₂O / ha at the time of sowing. Apply fertilizers in bands 7–8 cm away from the seeds to avoid injury.
4. Irrigation and Weed Control
- Irrigation: Usually requires 4–5 irrigations during the crop cycle. Critical watering times are at the pre-sowing, flowering, and pod-filling stages.
- Weeding: Keep the field weed-free by hand weeding 1-2 times or utilizing pre-emergence herbicides like Pendimethalin.
5. Pest and Disease Management
- Seed Treatment: Treat seeds with Captan, Thiram, or Bavistin before sowing, followed by a Rhizobium culture to enhance nitrogen fixation.
- Diseases: GS 10 has built-in tolerance to Powdery Mildew. For wilt and rust, avoid early sowing and use Dithane M-45 (0.2%) as a foliar spray if symptoms appear.
- Pests: For aphids, leaf miners, or stem flies, use dimethoate (0.03%) or malathion (0.05%).
6. Harvesting
- Pods are typically ready for picking 55 to 65 days after sowing. Harvest when pods are plump and filled with 8 to 10 tender, sweet, uniform grains.
